Dance Dialogues: conversations across cultures, artforms, practices
2008 World Dance Alliance Global Summit, Brisbane 12-18 July
Presented by Ausdance Queensland & the World Dance Alliance – Asia Pacific in partnership with QUT Creative Industries, Queensland Performing Arts Centre and Ausdance National
Curator: Cheryl Stock
The aim of this multi-platform event was to privilege both the voice and the practices of our emerging and experienced artists and to encourage interdisciplinarity of practice and academic scholarship. It was based around four major issues facing the arts in the 21st century:
transcultural conversations
re-thinking the way we make/teach dance
body/mind connections
sustainability
These four issues underpinned all program components which comprised a series of ‘dialogues’:
Dance Dialogues
headline event of daily conversations between key cultural thinkers/artists, including Li Cunxin (Mao’s Last Dancer), cultural theorist Rustom Bharucha, artistic directors of Australia’s dance companies
Performative Dialogues
conference program of scholarly presentations, panels and performances – digital and live – with artists contextualising their work through words and movement
Physical Dialogues
five-day intensive Choreolab led by choreographers/directors Lloyd Newson and Boi Sakti plus 12 International Masterclasses
Networking Dialogues
Global Assembly of WDA members from three regions (Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Americas) to discuss future projects and to network
Performance Dialogues
program of performances by leading and emerging Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists and companies as well as Brisbane screenings of the National ReelDance Festival.
